Take on one of South Africa’s best and toughest hiking trails at Amatola Hiking Trail! The 6 days and 5 nights trail will take you through the forest and waterfalls. The trail starts at Maden Dam near Qonce (Previously King Williams Town), along the Amatola Mountains, and ends in Hogsback. Hikers are required to obtain a permit from The Department of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries.

  • Arrange permits that will be ready for collection the day before you start the trail

  • Shuttle transport to the starting point of the trail
  • A map briefing before the start of trail

Trail itinerary:

Day 1:

The first day is the shortest day on the trail, and you will hike 12km and gain 763m in elevation from Maden Dam to Gwili Gwili Hut. Stay overnight at Gwili Gwili Hut in the forest. There are separate braai areas and hot showers.

Day 2:

A longer day on the trail, hiking 19km and gaining 633m elevation from Gwili Gwili Hut to Dontsa Hut. Hike through the forest and see the Keiskammahoek Valley. Spend the night at Dontsa Hut, and there are separate braai areas and a fireplace.

Day 3:

The longest day on the trail, hiking 21km and gaining 1,024m elevation from Dontsa Hut to Cata Hut. Hike over the grassland, seeing the wildflowers and passing the waterfall. Overnight at Cata Hut.

Day 4:

Similar to the first day, the hike is 14.5km and there is a gain of 634m in elevation from Cata Hut to Mnyameni Hut. On this day, you will reach the highest point on the trail, The Mighty Geju Peak. The hike will take you past a meteorite crash site and from there the descent to the Malan forest starts. Swim and relax in the rocky pools, and spend the night at Mnyameni Hut. There is no running water, but a nearby stream will provide the needed water.

Day 5:

Another tough day on the trail, hiking 19.4km and gaining 991m elevation from Mnyameni Hut to Zingcuka. Along the route, there are pools to swim in, and you will spend the night at Zingcuka. There are separate braai areas and a donkey boiler for hot water,

Day 6:

The last day is also a tough day! Hiking 16.2km and gaining 855m elevation from Zingcuka Hut to the Tyume River. Pass waterfalls in the Schwarzwald Forest, reach the Hogsback peak, and descent to the Tyume River.
